Mike Lee, Mayor and founder of Appsterdam
The city of Appsterdam The American founder and mayor Mike Lee came to Amsterdam, Netherlands and started the Appsterdam movement two years ago. Mike wanted to find a place which was suitable to inspire, craft and develop apps for mobile devices. Amsterdam was the best place, full of international talents, sociable and cozy to nurture successful ideas, and, as Dutch people would say, Amsterdam is gezellig*, for App Makers. What began as a casual, weekly gathering of app makers has blossomed into an international non-profit organization with volunteers and embassies in Italy, Greece, Germany, Poland, France and the U.S. *Gezellig has no proper translation in English. Its meaning includes everything from cozy to friendly, from comfortable to relaxing, and from enjoyable to gregarious. Mike, central in the picture below, is also an app maker himself. He was showing his latest creation in occasion at the Appsterdam 2 birthday event.

About Appsterdam From the Appsterdam Webiste: Stichting Appsterdam is a non-profit meta-organization that provides common ground for all App Makers, regardless of platform, occupation, or business model, in Amsterdam and beyond. An App Maker is a person or organization who contributes to the creation of apps, be they engineers, designers, businessmen, lawyers, or marketeers. An app is a piece of software that transforms its hardware to provide a complete productized experience. Appsterdam has proven to be a valuable resource for the tech and entrepreneurial scenes, providing a welcoming atmosphere to app makers of all skill levels and backgrounds. These app makers form a collective of developers, designers, artists, business types, and many more. The organization strives to meet the desires of its members and has organized nearly 450 events so far- an average of one event every other day.

Appsterdam events Appsterdam offers the Weekly Wednesday Lunchtime Lectures, WWLL. A forum for knowledge exchange in a casual environment. All Appsterdammers are encouraged to present a topic they’re familiar with. Everything is covered: from writing clean code, interaction design, marketing, to paying taxes; every Appsterdammer has something to share. With weekly opportunities to share knowledge, network, and socialize, Appsterdam has become the place for any app maker to improve their craft, thus boosting the app ecosystem at large. The 100%-volunteer driven organization has collaborated with well-known partners such as Microsoft, Gemeente Amsterdam, Universiteit van Amsterdam, Big Nerd Ranch, Softlayer, BNO, Waag Society, HockeyApp, and many others.
